Katharyn Havens

A good friend of mine once told me not to go to photography school because, he said, they might ‘suffocate your creative eye for pictures by making you follow all the rules.’ I am glad now I did go to school, but I am grateful even more for his unwavering belief that I already had that thing I was trying to find. My own way of seeing was there before university degrees, before learning the rules of photography and the rules of careers and life. Happy to have found my way back to that truth and the knowing that we must do what we love, I am 4 years into a great journey in images.

I have completed degrees in Marketing and Visual Journalism but so much education has come from continuing to follow my curiosity and love for travel whenever possible. I spent 4 years in Oslo, Norway and when I was too cold to take it any more, moved back to Houston and then to Santa Barbara. From Texas to California, Ohio and Illinois, I have photographed people and places. I have been both model and photographer. I have been privileged to take part in people’s lives at weddings, at births, in crisis, and in both triumph and defeat in sports and in daily life. I have been witness to the loudest and quietest moments of complete strangers – thanks to a camera.

Sometimes we only see in retrospect the pattern that all our weaving back and forth journeys have made. Each image I make seems to add to the tapestry that is my life, and I treat each with equal importance. I want to provide the space, technical know-how and artistry of making an image that when combined with the personality and ideas of the client proves to be a unique and fun combustion of creativity.
